Starting with the creation of the term “Buddhist psychology”, this book has reviewed the development of this discipline in Asia. The review is focused on but not limited to the Chinese academia, thus included the whole East Asia. Selecting East Asia for the review has a special historical meaning. The term “Buddhist Psychology” was first used in the Western academia by Rhys Davids (1857-1942) in her book Buddhist Psychology: an inquiry into the analysis and theory of mind in Pali Literature which was published in 1914. Interestingly, checking the Eastern academia, the term “Buddhist Psychology” was used earlier in 1898 by a Japanese scholar called Inoue Enryō (1858-1919). Later, Buddhist Psychology was introduced to China by Liang Qichao (1873-1929) and Master Taixu (1890-1947) around the 1920s. Influenced by the prevalence of Behaviourism, Chinese scholars tended to have a strong mistrust of Western psychology theories in the development of Buddhist psychology. Such attitude has a great influence to the development of Buddhist psychology in China till now. It is obvious that Buddhist psychology in the Eastern academia is strong in theoretical elaborations but relatively weak in empirical studies. Based on a critical review of the past, this book provides some suggestions for the future development of Buddhist psychology.

此書由學界開始使用「佛教心理學」作為起點，回顧這門學問發展至今的狀況。回顧及分析對象以華語學界為主，但不以此為限而涉及了整個東亞地區。研究對象選定為東亞地區具有歷史性的意義。查西方學界使用 Buddhist Psychology 的時間為1914年，Rhys Davids（1857-1942）出版了 Buddhist Psychology: an inquiry into the analysis and theory of mind in Pali Literature 一書。至於東亞學界，早在 1898 年日人井上円了（1858-1919）已出版了《仏教心理学講義》。後來，佛教心理學在1920年代開始在中國發展，最早由梁啟超（1873-1929）和太虛大師（1890-1947）作出論述。不過由於早期亞洲開始發展佛教心理學時，正值西方心理學界行為主義興盛的時期。因此，亞洲的學者大多抗拒西方心理學的理論範式。這樣的起點影響到佛教心理學在亞洲的發展出現重視義理闡述而較少實證性研究之現象。建基於前期發展之批判性回顧，書中提出了一些佛教心理學未來發展之建議。
