HSUHK Scholar: Dr. KWON Daesung – The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong
Dr. Kwon possesses a multidisciplinary academic background. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Politics with International Studies from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, followed by a master’s degree in Migration Studies from the University of Sussex in the UK. He earned a PhD in Contemporary Asian Studies from the Graduate School of Global Studies at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan, focusing his research on the internationalization of Japanese universities, Japan’s immigration policies, and international student migration. Prior to joining the Department of Social Science at HSUHK, he taught courses on various social and cultural issues in Japanese society, including immigration and minority issues, at the Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo) in Japan.
Currently, within the context of Japan’s demographic transformation characterized by a decreasing population and an increasingly aging society, Dr. Kwon is actively engaged in researching immigration and its associated challenges, as well as the politicization of immigration in Japan. He is also conducting scholarly inquiries into issues related to talent inflow and outflow, focusing on both Korea and Japan. Moreover, leveraging his personal experience as a transnational migrant who has resided in Korea, the United Kingdom, and Japan, he is in the process of authoring a book that explores the experiences and perceptions of transnational migrants. Additionally, he is an enthusiastic runner, having participated in full marathon races such as the Tokyo and Osaka Marathons over the past decade. Furthermore, he has a profound appreciation for literature and music, with a particular interest in jazz from the 1950s and 1960s. His admiration for jazz extends to his interest in the lives and stories of jazz musicians and their contributions to the genre.
